ISLAMABAD, (daily paklish): Chairperson, Defence of Human Rights (DHR), Amina Masood Janjua, has expressed profound sorrow and serious concern over the deteriorating situation in Rawalakot, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. She strongly regrets that ordinary citizens have been suffering for months due to prolonged tensions, restrictions on movement and the continued confrontation between the government and the Joint Awami Action Committee.

Amina Masood Janjua stated that it is deeply unfortunate that political differences and administrative failures have brought the lives of ordinary people to a standstill. Citizens should never become victims of political confrontations or be forced to pay the price for the failure of leadership.

According to alarming reports circulating on social media, security forces have allegedly used heavy weaponry against a peaceful sit-in in Rawalakot. There are also reports of a drone attack in the area, resulting in loss of human lives. If confirmed, these incidents represent an extremely serious violation of human rights and are deeply condemnable. The government must immediately ensure an independent and impartial investigation into these reports, disclose the verified details of casualties, and hold those responsible accountable in accordance with the law. The use of force against peaceful protesters and the endangerment of civilian lives are unacceptable under any circumstances.

Amina Masood Janjua urged the government to immediately initiate meaningful dialogue, exercise restraint, lift unnecessary restrictions on public movement and ensure the protection of civilians. She also called for an independent investigation into all reported incidents of firing and violence. She emphasised that access to healthcare, education, employment and freedom of movement are fundamental human rights, not privileges that can be suspended indefinitely. “The people of Kashmir deserve peace, dignity and justice, not fear, restrictions and violence. The government must remember that its foremost responsibility is to protect its people, not put their lives at risk. Dialogue, not confrontation, is the only way forward.
